Rescue Course After successfully completing the EFR First Aid Course with Matt Treby, The Sublime Dive Team arrived on a glorious sunny morning at Leybourne Lakes in Kent for the PADI Rescue Diver Course. According to the Dive Computer, the water temperature was 11 degrees however bodies were telling a different story. After a dive briefing they entered the chilly waters to begin the skills practice. At the end of the practice the students towed their buddies back into the side of the lake and just as they got back Steve and Jane went into a pre planned similated panic at the surface, effecting one of the rescue scenarios. An effective rescue was carried out by the students.
Later scenarios and skill practices saw the students lifting unresponsive divers from the bottom, providing rescue breaths with and without pocket masks, administering first aid, dekitting divers, different types of diver tows, panicked and distressed divers etc etc. Although it was cold we had a lot of fun and shared a lot of laughs. We finished off with shore rescues and practice throwing lines etc which caused lots of laughs amongst our group and even had passers by stopping, watching and laughing. Congratulations to everyone who took part.

Speciality PADI Recompression Chamber Awareness Course By Steve Elliott IDC Staff. First up was a change of clothes into surgical scrubs then a debrief by Chamber Supervisors Steve Mckenna and Danny Wright. Dive computers safely stored in a bucket of water to record the dive. Some items, which would be affected by pressure were taken into the chamber, a plastic bottle with a screw top and a balloon to display visually the effects of pressure at and during descent, depth and ascent.

"Four Seconds to go" was the call from the Hyperbaric Chamber Operator and then the nine students with attendant supervisor Danny Wright were off to 40 metres. By 25 metres laughter could be heard from the chamber as the pressure affected their vocal chords by 35 metres nitrogen narcosis was well and truly a member of the team by 40 metres, people were laughing and giggling at anything and everything, some literally holding their sides from so much laughter. Seven minutes at 40 metres saw a steady rise up to 9 metres for a safety stop then up to 6 metres for a 5 minute safety stop and the wearing of oxygen masks, they would breathe 100% Oxygen now all the way back to the surface.
On arrival back at the surface everyone had smiles waiting as the chamber door was opened, everyone collected their computers and as a group they collectively checked their dive computers which had logged a 35 minute dive to 40 metres. Danny Wright and Steve Mckenna gave a presentation on Decompression Illness, with both of them also being qualified diving instructors it was nice for the group to have the benefit of their experience and the benefit of the chamber staff being able to relate incidents to actual diving circumstances. Other conditions that can also be treated by Hyperbaric Medicine were also explained.
A change of clothes and everyone was given a tour of the facility and an explanation of the functions and controls of the Hyperbaric Chamber. An enjoyable day was had by all, for me it was a chance to see people enjoy the experience which always gives me a buzz and gave me a chance to refresh my Hyperbaric knowledge and re acquaint myself with the controls of the chamber. PADI Enriched Air Diver EANX - Nitrox
Nitrox is an oxygen rich gas up to a maximum of 40% oxygen. It allows for shorter surface intervals, longer bottom times and reduces the chance of decompression sickness. The course will be completed in an afternoon with some pre study required. Because of the benefits of Nitrox and with the advances in diving compressors Nitrox is becoming more widely available as a free option on both day boats and liveaboards and for these reasons its becoming a must have certification. Considering the benefits it offers it makes sense to be qualified to use it. This specialty can count towards your Master Scuba Diver rating. Details Click here to book
